As an AP Lit teacher, one of the biggest challenges that I face at my school is helping students feel comfortable with poetry analysis. By the time they get to their senior year, most of my class is pretty comfortable with reading, writing, and discussing novels, so I try to use this as my entry point to poetry analysis. At the beginning of the year, I emphasize that poetry analysis needs to be a collaborative process, especially early on. I tell them to think of the poem as a puzzle they will try to put together as a team. This shared google document lets my students work together on a set of poems and gives them a framework for better understanding each of their themes. Usually, I print the poems for them for annotations, but I like to have them fill out the chart together using the chromebooks if they are available. Writing an introduction can be hard; writing a conclusion is even harder. How does a student close a paper without summarizing what has already been said or introducing new material without time to fully unpack it? Below are two methods for writing effective conclusions:. Ask students if they can identify an interesting word or phrase from the introduction or early in their first body paragraph that they can link back to in their conclusion. The circle back method requires some finesse and stylistic nuance—because in order for it to be effective, it should only be a whisper or an echo from the opening.
I was asking them to bite off way more than they could chew and needed to figure out a way to scaffold practice of the many skills necessary for independently analyzing a text.
